Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges tops North Central College, 3-0

C-M-S swept North Central 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-12) on Saturday, September 5 at Roberts Pavilion in Claremont, California, improving to 2-0 on the young season while dropping the Cardinals to 2-2.

The Athenas controlled the match from wire to wire, hitting .309 as a team compared to North Central's .081. The gap was sharpest in the third set, where C-M-S held a .235 clip while North Central went negative at -.088. The service game was equally lopsided — C-M-S racked up 10 aces to North Central's one — and the Athenas also held the edge in blocks (7 to 3) and digs (63 to 44).

Shae Delany, Phoebe Shorney, and Lauren Staples each posted 10 kills to lead C-M-S offensively, with Staples adding a match-best 11.5 points on .625 hitting efficiency. Elise Arends anchored the back row with 21 digs and four aces, while setter Hayden Lin distributed 21 assists and added three aces of her own. For North Central, Ava Hoff and Abby Buban each finished with seven kills, and Buban contributed eight digs.

C-M-S rattled off an 8-0 run in the third set — from 3-5 to 3-13 — to effectively close out any hope of a North Central rally, prompting back-to-back Cardinal timeouts that could not stem the surge.

The win moves C-M-S to 2-0 on the season.
