Illinois Wesleyan University tops Elmhurst University, 3-0
No. 2 Illinois Wesleyan swept Elmhurst 25-22, 25-12, 25-21 on Tuesday, October 7 at R.A. Faganel Hall in Elmhurst, Illinois, improving to 15-1 overall and 4-0 in CCIW play.
The efficiency gap told the story: IWU hit .274 as a team compared to Elmhurst's .099, with the Titans' blocking unit — seven total blocks to Elmhurst's four — keeping the Blue Jays out of rhythm all evening. Set two was the clearest illustration of that edge, as Illinois Wesleyan posted a .400 attack percentage in the frame while holding Elmhurst to .000. The Titans also held a 43-28 kill advantage across the match.
Alex Bardouniotis paced Illinois Wesleyan with 12 kills to go along with six digs, while Cailin Shannon added 10 kills and hit an efficient .529 on the night. Setter Sophia Feeney orchestrated the offense with 22 assists, and libero Alysa Lawton anchored the back row with 13 digs. For Elmhurst, Katie Hurta led all players with eight kills and matched Lawton with 13 digs.
Illinois Wesleyan opened the third set on a 7-1 run — capped by an Alysa Lawton service ace — to put the match firmly in hand early in the deciding frame.
The win moves No. 2 Illinois Wesleyan to 15-1 on the season and 4-0 in conference play.
