Illinois Wesleyan University tops Wheaton College, 3-1

No. 4 Illinois Wesleyan swept through three sets before dropping the third, then closed out Wheaton 25-13, 25-14, 19-25, 25-18 on Wednesday, September 30 at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Illinois, in front of 250 fans.

The Titans held a commanding edge in kills (57-35) and a decisive ace margin (11-3) that put consistent pressure on Wheaton's serve-receive throughout the match. Illinois Wesleyan hit .237 for the match to Wheaton's .139, with particularly efficient sets in the first (.343) and fourth (.313). The third set was a different story — IWU's attack percentage dropped to .054 while Wheaton surged to .267, fueled by a 12-block performance from the Thunder that helped them take the set 25-19. IWU responded in the fourth with a cleaner .313 clip to close things out.

Alex Bardouniotis led all players with 18 kills, adding 11 digs and a service ace for a 19.5-point performance. Graci Junis contributed 13 kills, seven aces, and 11 digs — a standout all-around line — while Sophia Feeney ran the offense with 23 assists. For Wheaton, Heidi Horan finished with a team-high eight kills and Sydney Overweg posted 7 kills and 8 blocks.

Graci Junis served a six-consecutive-ace run midway through the second set, pushing IWU from a 9-9 tie to 9-18 and effectively putting the frame out of reach.

The win moves Illinois Wesleyan to 13-1 overall and 2-0 in CCIW play.
